Our blog needs a name. It needs its own url. To have Nacho’s work under eileenmignoni.com, does a disservice to him. To buy a url, we need a name. We can’t decide on one. Multimedia in the Hyper South, I made up. Nacho says it’s too long. He’s right. We also need to be thinking about search engine optimization. We want a title that will bring people interested in this topic to our site. Multimedia, hence, should be in our title.
I like the word hyper. I like the way that it functions both to discuss the internet, and our location (really, really, really far south.) Do people still use the word hyper in reference to the internet? Our works aren’t exactly hypertexts. They’re very linear.
Multimedia Badass is owned by someone else. I wouldn’t take that one but I think it’s super funny. I like Works and Days. It’s taken and we would likely be found by more classicists than journalists. That Sucks makes me laugh, but also is taken and is not appropriate. So what then? So we are stuck on my url, which might be worse than anything we can think of.
An important part of this blog is going to be a discussion of decisions we make in multimedia and why. Sometimes those decisions will be made with careful consideration and sometimes those decisions will be made because they must be, due to deadline constraints, and the necessity of moving forward in a project. As above – we need a name so we can have a url. We need a name, so we can design a logo. We need a name, so we can create a favicon. Another reason for making these decisions public is that perhaps there are those who can weigh in on these decisions, adding more minds to the mix.
We made another decision, largely based on the design of this blog, and also because we’re in the business of visuals – every post will have an image. The above is from a shoot I did for a catalog of a law school here in Chile. I also did a number of posed shots, for which I used fill flash. The light worked but those shots lacked so much of the naturalness of the shots when the students where engaged in their classes.
I like the idea of playing with the location of where you are, far south.. There are so many blogs with multimedia in their names that I don’t really thing that is extremely important to name.. you can always add a tagline explaining what the blog is, with the multimedia word on it, so google can pick that up. Also to consider when you are looking for a name, is this going to be just about works you do or will you feature other works?
This blog is going to be about our personal experiences, as we try to make a living and produce meaningful content. Not so long ago I was trying to explain to someone why an interview she was excited about wasn’t going to work well. The subject had spoken at length about her thoughts on a big political issues, but had spoken very little about what she herself had seen or felt. The only thing most people can offer with authority is their experience, not their broad ideas about a subject. I think our experiences as we try new techniques, I learn how to shoot in Santiago or we decide whether stock is an option for us will be instructive for others who have to make similar decisions.
So, names… I’ve always sucked at putting titles to articles or finding interesting names, therefore half of this will probably be crap. Sorry :S
Multimedia madness
Living multimedia
Debating multimedia
Multimedia at the end of the world (too long I think)
Anyways… I tried to use the hyper… didn’t really work for me.
PS: Let me know when you change de url because I’ll need to change it on my blogroll, k?
